When I was a kid, one of my favorite things to do was to dig in the dirt and watch the worms crawl (slither?) around. Back then I had no idea how beneficial worms were. As an adult, I've learned how important worms are to not only our gardens, but our environment. Our mission at HWF/SNWF is to help people learn the benefits of vermicomposting, provide what they need to get started and help reduce the waste that is produced by purchasing produce at grocery stores.

Vermicomposting offers some huge benefits for gardeners. Waste reduction and moisture retention are big ones especially in an environment like southern Nevada. Moisture retention is one of the most important aspects of gardening in this desert environment. What kind of difference could we make if 20% of the valley grew 20% of their own vegetables? 30%? 50%? In my next post, I'll discuss the importance of healthy soil as it pertains to our diets as well as our environment.
